ING-NA2: Lecturas recomendadas: THE BROOKLYN FOLLIES (Paul Auster)

septiembre 26, 2008

Nathan and Tom are an uncle and nephew double-act – one in remission from lung cancer, divorced, and estranged from his only daughter, the other hiding away from his once-promising academic career. Matters change when Lucy, a little girl who refuses to speak, comes into their lives…

“‘The Brooklyn Follies is Auster at the top of his game, sublimating the graft of writing into supremely effortless prose. His words are slinky and supple; his characters sing off the page.’ Alastair Sooke, New Statesman ‘No metaphysical writer can make you feel more like you’re being read a bedtime tale by a gentle, hangdog uncle… there is still a hint of the magical in the everyday events that he chronicles.’ Tom Cox, The Times” .

ING-NA2: Lecturas recomendadas: THE VAN (Roddy Doyle)

septiembre 26, 2008

High comedy set in north Dublin, which begins when unemployed Jimmy and his best friend Bimbo buy a decrepit fish-and-chip van. Billed as ‘a tender tale of male friendship, swimming in grease and stained with ketchup’, shortlisted for the 1991 Booker Prize. Of it, Dermot Healy, author of Sudden Times wrote: ‘I took up The Van one winter’s night and was laughing out loud. Doyle’s touch in dialogue is masterly but he also has a sort of resoluteness in pursuing the illusion as far as it will go. Into sordidness and on. The chip van of the title is described in intense detail. You can smell the oils, the chips. You can see the grease stuck to the walls. And behind the scenes some sort of fervent sorrow keeps driving the characters. Doyle is really a gifted dissident besides one of those rare things – a natural novelist.

ING-NA1: Lecturas recomendadas: THE BEST A MAN CAN GET (John O’Farrell)

septiembre 26, 2008

Some men are born fathers, while others have fatherhood thrust upon them. The protagonist of John O’Farrell’s The Best a Man Can Get imagine the lure of a child-proof hideaway, insulated from sleepless nights and dirty diapers. At the same time, Adams often wonders whether “just being tucked up warm and cosy” is really “the best a man can get”. With its charming prose and its truant protagonist, this first novel is sure to win over even the most belongs indisputably in the latter category. When his first daughter is born, Michael Adams imagines her as the warden of a prison that will permanently deprive him of his youth and freedom. Terrified by his new responsibilities, he regularly escapes to a bachelor pad across the Thames, pretending to be at work. Another child arrives–and with still another on the way, it is only a matter of time until Michael’s wife discovers his double life. At that point, he must make a choice between his family and his hedonistic haven. By turns hilarious and touching, O’Farrell’s book delves deeply into the anxieties of modern parenting. Yet the novel is not without empathy for the 21st-century father. After all, it’s easy to reluctant parent. –Greg Bensinger
