Novedades Libros Inglés (enero 2010): THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK

enero 7, 2010

Anne Frank began to keep a diary on her thirteenth birthday, June 12, 1942, three weeks prior to going into hiding with her mother Edith Frank, father Otto Frank, sister Margot Frank and four other people, Hermann van Pels, Auguste van Pels, Peter van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer, in the sealed-off upper rooms of the annex of her father’s office building in Amsterdam. In the published version, names were changed: the van Pels are known as the van Daans and Fritz Pfeffer is known as Mr. Dussel. With the assistance of a group of Otto Frank‘s trusted colleagues, they remained hidden for two years and one month, until their betrayal in August 1944, which resulted in their deportation to Nazi concentration camps. Of the group of eight, only Otto Frank survived the war. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen from a typhus infection in early March, shortly (about two weeks) before liberation by British troops in April 1945.

Novedades DVD Inglés (enero 2010): AUSTRALIA

enero 7, 2010

In 1939, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) travels from England to northern Australia to force her philandering husband to sell his faltering cattle station, Faraway Downs. Her husband sends an independent cattle drover (Hugh Jackman), called simply “Drover”, to Darwin to transport her to Faraway Downs.

Lady Sarah’s husband is murdered shortly before she arrives, and the white authorities tell her that the killer is an Aboriginal elder with magical powers, “King George” (David Gulpilil). Meanwhile, cattle station manager Neil Fletcher (David Wenham) is trying to gain control of Faraway Downs, so that Lesley ‘King’ Carney (Bryan Brown) will have a complete cattle monopoly in the Northern Territory, giving him negotiating leverage with an Australian army officer, Captain Dutton (Ben Mendelsohn)…

Novedades DVD Inglés (enero 2010): THE READER (El Lector)

enero 7, 2010

The Reader is a 2008 drama film based on the 1995 German novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink. The film adaptation was written by David Hare and directed by Stephen Daldry. Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet star along with the young actor David Kross. It was the last film for producers Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack, both of whom died before it was released. Production began in Germany in September 2007, and the film opened in limited release on 10 December 2008.

It tells the story of Michael Berg, a German lawyer who as a teenager in the late 1950s had an affair with an older woman, Hanna Schmitz, who then disappeared only to resurface years later as one of the defendants in a war crimes trial stemming from her actions as a guard at a Nazi concentration camp in the later years of World War II. Michael realizes that Hanna is keeping a personal secret she believes is worse than her Nazi past — a secret which, if revealed, could help her at the trial…
